BURN AFTER FREEZING

Todays’s Fitness Tip + Motivation

Shed more weight by embracing winter training.

Winter is coming! As Winterfell prepares for the great war, you prepare to tuck inside your warm houses.

We’d forgive you for not wanting to lace up your running shoes and venture outside this winter, but by braving the icy conditions you could be burning a surprising amount of calories. Rather than scuppering your training plans, cold weather can stimulate fat cells known as adipose tissue, according to research in the Journal of Critical Investigation. These cells extract glucose from the blood and while fat stores to keep the body’s core temperature up – in effect, burning unwanted fat.

In one study the metabolic rates of participants increased 80% when they were exposed to cold temperatures, burning 250 calories over thress hours without doing anything – a calorie burn equivalant of staring at the same four walls during a gym-based cardio session, head outside and reap the rewards of a winter workout.

Endurance runners perfor better in low temperatures, reaping the greatest benefit at 4-7 degree celsius. (Mens Fitness Mag)
